Acrylic is the honest choice
The base is dental acrylic, tinted to gum tone, with cast wire clasps hooking around two or more of your standing teeth. Teeth are set into the base at the height your bite asks for. It is the oldest removable design still in use, and it is still in use because it works.
Acrylic is rigid. That is a disadvantage in comfort and an advantage everywhere else. A rigid plate spreads the bite instead of flexing under it, so chewing feels steadier than on a soft base, and a rigid plate can be ground, drilled, added to and repaired.
The clasps are the one thing people ask about. They are thin, they sit behind the smile line wherever the arch allows it, and they are the reason an acrylic plate stays put without any bulk over the gum.
What acrylic does that flexible cannot
It takes a repair
A cracked acrylic base is bonded back together at a bench. A nylon base is not repairable in any lasting way, so a break means a rebuild.
It takes a reline
Gums shrink after an extraction. Acrylic can be relined to the new shape, which buys a plate years rather than months.
It takes another tooth
Lose one more later and a tooth can be added to the same plate instead of starting a new one.
Repairs, relines and additions are bench work rather than catalogue items. Write to us with photographs and we quote the job before anything is touched.
Where the $469 goes
Acrylic is the least expensive base we pour, and almost none of the cost is material. What you are buying is the bench hour, the set of teeth and the mold work behind them.
In the price sits the $49.99 impression kit, the shade guide, the video instructions, cleaning foam, a storage case and postage prepaid in both directions. Thirty days of adjustments cost nothing, as many as you need. Sixty days from delivery cover a defect in the build.
A dental office splits the same work into a mold appointment, a try-in, a delivery appointment and adjustment visits, each billed on its own. Neither way is wrong. Only one of them tells you the number before you commit.
Both arches on one order comes to $619 rather than $938, and one kit covers both.
How the order runs
- Kit out within daysTwo to three business days to your address, prepaid label already inside the box.
- Mold and shadeTake both trays, hold the shade tab beside your own teeth in daylight and photograph it. That photograph is how we match the set.
- Poured and postedSix to ten business days at the bench, then the parcel comes back with foam and a mirrored case.
Acrylic against the alternatives
| Build | Base | Clasps | One arch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Acrylic flipper | Rigid acrylic | Thin wire | $319 |
| Acrylic partial denture | Rigid acrylic | Cast wire | $469 |
| Flexible partial denture | Nylon, gum toned | None visible | $549 |
| Cast metal partial | Metal frame | Cast metal | $749 |
Metal clasps showing is the usual reason people move up a row. Flexible partials hide them completely.
Asked most often about acrylic
Whether the clasps show
On back teeth, almost never. On a canine or a premolar a thin line of metal can catch the light when you laugh widely. Tell us which teeth you smile with and we place the clasps as far back as the grip allows.
How thick the plate feels
Acrylic needs body to stay rigid, so the first few days feel bulky against the tongue and speech takes an evening to settle. Reading aloud for ten minutes a day is the fastest way through it.
Sleeping in it
Take it out. Gums need the hours without pressure, and the plate wants a rinse and a dry case overnight. Wearing one around the clock is what brings on soreness.
Cleaning it properly
Brush it over a full sink so a drop does not crack it, use the foam from your box rather than toothpaste, and keep it in water or a damp case. Acrylic left dry for days will craze.
If a tooth comes loose from the base
Photograph it and send the order number. Inside sixty days of delivery that is a build defect and it is on us. After that it is a bench repair and we quote it first.
Paying with an HSA card
Yes. Removable dental appliances are ordinarily an eligible expense, and the HSA and FSA page sets out what your administrator will want to see.
