How long does a flipper tooth last

Up to 2 years with daily care, what shortens it, and what a replacement costs

With daily cleaning most flippers last up to 2 years. Heat and rough cleaning wear one out faster than the calendar does.

An acrylic flipper is $287 an arch at Smile Lab USA. Break it in the first 12 months and we make one new one free from the model on file.

What shortens a flipper's life

Acrylic flippers with one and two teeth and wire clasps
HabitWhat it does
Hot water or the dishwasherWarps the acrylic, so it stops fitting
Bleach or whitening pasteScratches and dulls the base and the tooth
Ice, hard nuts, crusty bread, caramelSnaps the acrylic base

Every day, rinse it in cool water and brush it with a denture brush, nothing else.

Every night, keep it in water, in the case, out of your mouth.

Signs your flipper needs replacing

Acrylic flipper seated on a dental model, side and front view
  • It rocks or slips when you talk.
  • A clasp is bent, loose or broken.
  • There is a crack or a chip in the pink base.
  • The false tooth came off.
  • Stains stay after a proper clean.
  • A gap opened under it as the gum healed.

A loose fit after an extraction is normal. The gum shrinks for months while it heals.

Is a flipper a permanent solution

Many people wear one for years and never move to an implant.

It is thinner and lighter than a partial denture, so it wears faster under heavy chewing.

If you want a tooth for chewing, a partial holds up longer. An acrylic partial is $469 an arch.

Flipper lifespan questions

How long does a flipper tooth last

With daily cleaning most flippers last up to 2 years. Heat, bleach and hard food are what shorten one.

Can a flipper last 5 years

Some do, but plan on up to 2 years. By then the fit has often loosened and a new one sits better.

How often should a flipper be replaced

When it rocks, cracks or a clasp loosens. With daily care that is usually around the 2 year mark.

Can a broken flipper be fixed

Yes. A cracked base, a broken clasp or a tooth that came off can be repaired by mail for $89.
