What a stayplate is and what it costs

A flipper by another name, and what changes between the chair and the mail

A stayplate is a temporary acrylic partial denture. It is the same appliance most people call a flipper, a thin plate with one or two replacement teeth that clips onto the teeth you still have.

Dentists use the word stayplate when the plate is meant to hold the space while a gum heals or an implant is planned. The plate itself is the same acrylic flipper we make from the mold you take at home, $319 an arch.

Acrylic, semi-flex and flexible flippers with prices

Stayplate cost at a dental office and online

WherePriceWhat is in it
Dental office stayplate$300 to $1,000Exam, impressions in the chair, two or three visits billed on top
Acrylic flipper, $319 an arch$319Impression kit, postage both ways, 30 days of adjustments
Semi-flex flipper$349Firmer body, softer edge on the gum
Flexible flipper$399Bends with the gum, pink clasps with nothing metal on show

The office price is the plate plus the room it was ordered in. Online the plate comes from the same kind of acrylic and the same mold, so the number drops to the plate alone.

Stayplate vs partial denture

A stayplate is a partial denture, just the lightest and simplest version. A full partial denture carries more teeth, often has a metal frame or a flexible nylon base, and is built to be worn for years.

  • Stayplate or flipper, one to three teeth, acrylic, wire clasps, from $319.
  • Flexible partial, two to eight teeth, nylon base, pink clasps, from $549.
  • Cast metal partial, any number of teeth, metal frame, $749.

If the gap is one or two front teeth, the stayplate is usually enough. If several teeth are missing on both sides, look at a partial denture from $399.

How long a stayplate lasts

Most people wear a stayplate for six months to two years. Acrylic is light and easy to clean, and the wire clasps keep it in place through meals and talking. It is not built for biting into hard food, so take it out for steak, nuts and anything sticky.

Every flipper here comes with 30 days of unlimited adjustments and a 60 day warranty on the build, so the fit is sorted while the gum settles.

How to order a stayplate from home

Order the acrylic flipper online. We mail the impression kit, you take the mold at the kitchen table in about half an hour, and the prepaid label takes it back to us. A licensed dentist reviews your photos, our technicians build the plate, and it reaches you in 6 to 10 business days door to door. Rush takes it to 3 to 6 business days.

The impression kit and the postage are already inside the $319. HSA and FSA cards work here, check with your plan administrator.

Stayplate questions

Is a stayplate the same as a flipper

Yes. Stayplate is the older dental name for a temporary acrylic partial denture, and flipper is what most people call it today. It is one appliance.

Can you eat with a stayplate

Soft food yes. Take it out for hard and sticky food, because the plate is thin acrylic and the clasps are small wires.

How much does a stayplate cost

At a dental office $300 to $1,000 with the visits billed on top. Online from $319 an arch with the impression kit and postage included.

How long can you wear a stayplate

Six months to two years is typical. Many people wear a flipper far longer when it is cleaned daily and taken out at night.

Does insurance cover a stayplate

Some plans cover an interim partial denture under codes D5820 and D5821. Ask your plan before you order, and HSA and FSA cards work here.
