Flipper tooth cost with or without insurance

What a plan pays, what the missing tooth clause means, and what the flipper costs when the plan says no

Without insurance a flipper tooth costs $319 to $399 online and $300 to $1,000 at a dental office. With insurance, a plan that covers interim partial dentures pays a share after the deductible, usually 50 percent, unless a missing tooth clause rules it out.

The online price is the plate with the impression kit and postage inside it. The office price is the same plate plus the exam and two or three visits billed on top.

What the missing tooth clause means

Many dental plans refuse to pay for replacing a tooth that was already missing before the plan started. That rule is called the missing tooth clause. If you lost the tooth years ago and signed up last spring, the plan can decline a flipper, a bridge or an implant for that gap.

Plans with no missing tooth clause exist, they cost more each month, and the clause is written in the plan document under exclusions. Ask before you count on coverage.

How to find out before you order

  • Ask the office for the code on the treatment plan, a flipper is D5820 upper or D5821 lower.
  • Call the number on your card, give the code, and ask what share they pay and whether a missing tooth clause applies.
  • Ask about the waiting period, many plans wait six to twelve months before major work.

The dental code for a flipper tooth page lists every removable partial code.

If the plan says no

An HSA or FSA card pays for a flipper with pre tax money and no claim, because a flipper is a dental appliance that replaces a missing tooth. Pay with the card at checkout, keep the itemized receipt, and check with your plan administrator. See HSA and FSA eligible dental appliances.

A second flipper later, after the gum settles or the style changes, is 30 percent off from the saved model with Mold Once.
